Majalah Anestesia & Critical Care (MACC) is committed to upholding the highest standards of scientific integrity, originality, and ethical conduct in all aspects of publication. This policy outlines the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by authors, editors, and peer reviewers.
Authors' Responsibilities and Disclosure
Mandatory Disclosure: Authors are required to disclose any use of AI tools or large language models (LLMs) in the development of their manuscript. This includes, but is not limited to, use for:
- Writing assistance, language editing, or translation.
- Data analysis, interpretation, or visualization.
- Literature searches or summarization.
- Generating code or algorithms.
How to Disclose: The disclosure must be detailed in the Methods (for research involving AI analysis) or Acknowledgments (for writing/editing assistance) section of the manuscript. Authors must specify the name of the AI tool, the version, the developer, and the specific purpose for which it was used.
Prohibition of Authorship: AI tools, in any form, cannot be listed as an author or co-author of a submitted manuscript. Authorship requires the ability to take full responsibility for the work, a capacity that AI does not possess.
Accountability: Authors remain fully and solely responsible for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and conclusions of their work, irrespective of any AI assistance used. Authors are expected to critically review all AI-generated content and ensure its correctness.
Editorial Team's Responsibilities
Disclosure: The editorial team must disclose any use of AI in the handling or processing of manuscripts. Use is restricted to administrative or technical support tools, such as plagiarism detection software or grammar/style checkers. The use of AI for editorial decision-making is prohibited.
Substantive Decisions: AI tools must not be used to replace the scientific judgment of the editor-in-chief or the editorial board in making acceptance, revision, or rejection decisions. All editorial decisions will be made by humans with the requisite expertise.
Prohibitions for Peer Reviewers
Strict Prohibition: Peer reviewers (Mitra Bestari) are strictly prohibited from using any form of AI or LLM in the review process. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Using AI to analyze, summarize, or evaluate the manuscript.
- Using AI to formulate or write peer review comments.
- Uploading or inputting any part of the manuscript, including figures or data, into an AI tool or platform.
Confidentiality: This prohibition is essential for maintaining the strict confidentiality of the manuscript and the double-blind peer review process, as mandated by MACC's policies. Sharing a manuscript with an external AI tool violates this confidentiality.
General Principles and Responsibilities
The use of AI by authors or editors does not diminish their responsibility for:
- Originality: Ensuring the work is free from plagiarism and is the author's own original research.
- Confidentiality: Protecting the confidentiality of the manuscript and its contents during the review and editing process.
- Integrity: Maintaining the overall scientific and ethical integrity of the published article and the editorial decisions surrounding it.
Violations and Sanctions
Any failure to disclose the use of AI as required, or any prohibited use by reviewers, will be considered a serious ethical violation. MACC reserves the right to reject a manuscript or retract a published article in cases of non-compliance. All such cases will be handled in accordance with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.
